If the router needs to be reloaded for any reason, the reload command needs to be entered from privileged mode, as shown in Example 4-4. The reload command also allows a time to be set so that the system restarts after the specified time expires. This command is used to reboot the Cisco device. I learned something interesting about the CIsco 'Reload' command; you can schedule it! So I thought I would share for those that don't know or may not have thought to use it in this manner. It can provide a fail-safe for when you need to apply configurations in situations that may break your terminal connection to the device and possibly break your connectivity, which can be critical if the device is remote. This can possibly work on other hardware so you may want to check command options to see if it can be adapted to other brands of hardware you work with.
Example: You are adding an Access Control List that could possibly disrupt network traffic, so you could use the reload command with a time to reboot a device in the event it breaks the network in some way. Yes, having the network down for a few moments as it reloads is not a good thing, but having a router you can no longer remotely manage is of much more concern, especially if it is at a remote site where there is no one that can access it out of band.
3 Steps total
Step 1: Ensure no one else is logged into the device
The first thing you should do is run the 'show users' command from priv exec mode to ensure no one else is logged into the router. Good communication among the network management team is advised.
Step 2: Scheduling a Cisco Reload command

Before entering a configuration that could disrupt your network traffic you would enter the reload command and add a time for it to reload. There are a few options as to how you can enter the time for the reload. The easiest method is to run from priv exec mode 'reload in XX'. Substitute the XX for the number of minutes until the reload will execute. Be sure to allow yourself enough time to enter and test the configuration you are wanting to apply.
Step 3: Cancel or allow the reload
If your configuration was successful and nothing was broken by it, you can run the 'reload cancel' command from priv exec mode and it will abort the scheduled reload.
If your configuration had an undesirable outcome, simply allow the timer to run out and your device to reload and it will use the saved startup config and your device will return to it's previous configuration.
While testing in a lab first is always best, you may not always have that option, so this method might be the difference between a minor and major network outage.

The following example shows how to reload the software on the router at 1:00 p.m. on that day:
Router# reload at 13:00

The following example shows how to reload the software on the router on April 21 at 2:00 a.m.:
Router# reload at 02:00 apr 21
Router# Reload scheduled for 02:00:00 PDT Sat Apr 21 1996 (in 38 hours and 9 minutes)

I learned this trick years ago when I was doing WAN configurations for 15 locations. I was working on a Saturday logged in remote to an office 200 miles away. Made a config change that locked me out. With no one there to reboot the device, I spent six hours on a nice weekend to drive to that office to get it back online. Thankfully that was the nearest remote office and not the farthest or it would have been an overnight trip.
But yes, it's nice to give yourself an automatic reboot set for 15 or 30 minutes out to save yourself from that kind of dumb mistake.

Great point, I’ve been bailed out by the reload command countless times. Only bad thing is it’s not present in nexus switches. I believe there’s another way to accomplish the same thing, just not reload in.

Chris, I'm taking my second CCNA Data Center class starting 3/30/19. I'll try to remember what the comparable action is to mimic this type of command and write another Ho-To for NexusOS.

reloadコマンドを使うと、CiscoルータやCatalystを再起動出来ます。
再起動が必要な設定を行った場合や、IOSやIOS XEをアップデートした時等に使います。
時間を指定して再起動する事も出来ます。
尚、SUPが冗長化された機器で装置全体を再起動するためには、redundancy reload shelfコマンドを実行しなければいけない機種もあります。そのような機種でreloadコマンドを実行すると、アクティブ側のSUPだけ再起動されます。
reloadコマンドの構文は以下の通りです。
オプションを付けずに実行すると装置全体を再起動します。スタック構成の場合は、スタックを構成するスイッチ全てが再起動されます。
スタック構成時にslotオプションを指定すると、指定したスイッチだけ再起動する事が出来ます。
atを付けると再起動する月日や時間を指定出来ます。inは何時間何分後に再起動するかです。cancelはその取り消しです。
reloadコマンドの利用例は以下の通りです。
赤字の部分でrunning-configをstartup-configに保存するか書かれているため、yes or noで入力します。
緑色の部分は再起動して良いかの確認のため、そのままエンターキーを押します。
スタック構成でメンバーの1台だけ再起動する場合の利用例は以下の通りです。
上記でスタックメンバー番号3番のスイッチだけ再起動されます。
atオプションの利用例は以下の通りです。
その日の21:00に再起動されます。もし、21時を過ぎて指定すると次の日の21時に再起動されます。月日を指定する場合はreload at 21:00 Jan 3等になります。
inオプションの利用例は以下の通りです。
上記で10分後に再起動します。1:30と指定すると1時間30分後という意味になります。
